Barranquilla City Guide
OVERVIEW: Barranquilla, Colombia. Better known as the birthplace of Shakira and Sofia Vergara. It's located in the north of the country, and is the fourth-largest city after Cali, Medellin and Bogota. The carnival of Barranquilla is one of the most famous in the country.
WEATHER: Tropical savanna (24-32 °C). Rainy season April-June and August-September.
SAFETY: Fairly safe in Barranquilla. There are neighbourhoods that you should not visit, but in general Barranquilla is safer than Medellin and Bogota.
MUST DO: Hang out. I cannot think of anything you "must do" here aside from eating, sleeping and partying.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN BARRANQUILLA: $350.00 will put you up in a modest apartment or house in a decent neighbourhood in Barranquilla.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $12.00
NIGHTLIFE IN BARRANQUILLA: 7/10
Pales in comparison to Bogota and Medellin. Also, there doesn't seem to be a specific nightlife district in Barranquilla; everything is frustratingly spread out. There are some bars northeast of Parque Venezuela that are pretty good.
I recommend: Frogg Leggs Club. Far and away the most popular disco in town.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $1.75
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN BARRANQUILLA: 7.75/10
You are a foreigner, thus, you are a novelty in Barranquilla. It takes very little effort to meet women here, day or night, and if you look exotic, it's even easier. The thing is, though, is that very few people speak English, so knowing even just the slightest bit or Spanish will help a lot. There are very few gringos here as well, so if you thrive on the support of your countrymen, Barranquilla might not be the best place for you.

ARE GIRLS HOT IN BARRANQUILLA?: 7.5/10.
It beats Cartagena and Manizales, but lags behind the other Colombian cities included on My Latin Life. If personalities had tits and ass though, Barranquilla would top the list: girls here are remarkably friendly, amiable and sensual.
If you want to make the most of your time in Colombia, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.20 Loaf of Bread= $1.50 Eggs= $2.00 Water (1.5L)= $1.20 Cigarettes= $2.00
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Nothing much. There doesn't seem to be too much of a demand for English teachers here.
NOTES: Downsides: An ugly, industrial city without much in the way of culture tourist attractions. Upsides: Very approachable women, very few tourists, safe and good location. If you don't have much time in Colombia, I would skip in in favour of Medellin, Bogota and Cali.
OVERALL RATING: 7.25/10
