I have a fun game for you to try.
Ask any Latin American what they think of Peruvian girls.
"Feas", they'll say.
That means ugly.
Ask fellow foreigners and you'll find the responses polarizing.
Some love them, and some hate them.
So, what's the deal?
As you know, here on My Latin Life, I like to talk about the hard-hitting issues of our time. So I'm here to help you get to the bottom of this incendiary question.
Are Peruvian girls hot?
Why is this important?
Well, it really isn't...you know, in the whole scheme of things. We've all (hopefully) got bigger things to worry about. But it's an interesting topic nonetheless because I've never been to a place in Latin America where opinions on this subject are so split.
In Bolivia, most everyone will tell you that the women are ugly. There aren't going to be too many that disagree.
Mexico is a bit more up in the air, but most people would agree that the women - while not stunning - are certainly good enough.
But Peru? It really depends who you ask.
So, why the conflicting reports?
This is my theory.
Here's the thing about Peru...
After having travelled around the country a bit, I've come to a startling realization:
There are only two cities in this country that have a decent number of good-looking women.
Everywhere else is pretty dire.
This is different than in, say, Brazil, where you will find decent looking girls in any adequately sized city, all the way from Fortaleza to Porto Alegre.
Or Colombia, where you've got fine women in Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Manizales, Pereira, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, etc.
If a man comes to this country and doesn't spend any time in the two aforementioned Peruvian cities, he is not going to come away with a good impression of the local women.
It would be like going to Chiapas in Mexico and using that as your benchmark to say that all Mexican girls are ugly.
OK, so what about Lima?
The city of Lima is home to nearly 30% of Peru's population. So, if you want a decent representation of what Peruvian women look like on the whole, this city will serve as your best example.
After living here for six months, I know the place pretty well. And (feel free to quote me on this) yes, there are plenty of hot girls in Lima.
There are two peculiarities that I've noticed when it comes to finding women in this city that make it unlike any place I've been to in South America.
1) I've never been to a city where beautiful women are so compartmentalized
Of course, in any affluent area of any large city in Latin America, you will find hotter women than you would in the poor areas. That's just the way it is. Everyone knows that. But I have never been to a city quite like Lima in this regard. The quality-of-women disparity that you'll find in different neighbourhoods is vast. Do some people watching in Miraflores on Av. Pardo near Parque Kennedy and you'll be a happy man. But walk a few blocks into Surquillo and you'll be lucky to see one hot girl the entire afternoon.
My first time in Lima I spent a lot of time in the Centro and La Victoria neighbourhoods. Days would pass before I saw a single woman I was attracted to. But when I decided to take a trip to Larcomar in Miraflores? It took about 5 minutes before I saw something I liked.
Again, this quality gap is common in Latin American cities. Cross over from Roma Norte to Doctores in Mexico City and you'll notice a strong drop-off. But Lima takes this concept to new extremes.
2) Summer vs. Winter
Lima has two distinct seasons: summer and winter. In summer, it's mostly sunny skies and a temperature of around 25 C. In winter, it's clouds all day and temperatures below 20 C. Having spent time here in both the summer and winter months, I've noticed a significant correlation between the drop in temperature and the drop in talent.
This is probably due to two things: a decrease in revealing clothing that young Limeñas like to wear in warm weather, and the fact that people are spending more time inside.
Point is, unlike Medellin or Guadalajara where the weather is pretty much the same year round and girls are always out, the quality you'll see on the streets of Lima will be lower if you come in winter. The best time to visit is from December to May.
Note: there will also be an exodus of the sexier, richer girls to Playa Asia during the summer months, so I suggest doing a trip there.
Most of the guys who have good things to say about the quality of girls in Lima spend the majority, if not all, of their time in Miraflores. Just be aware of this before you go.
What Does The Average Peruvian Girl Look Like?
I won't sugarcoat it, the average Peruvian lass is going to look more or less like this:
You can also find ones that look like this, but we're talking top 5-10%
The latter you're not going to see out much during the day. But in Playa Asia or clubs like MIA, you can find them.
The challenge with meeting hot girls in Lima has to do with numbers. The fact that the best looking women here are no easier to sleep with than the best looking women anywhere in the world, and the fact that there aren't nearly as many gorgeous girls as you'll find in Colombia, means that you're simply not going to have as many opportunities.
Whereas in Colombia you might see 50 girls a day you'd want to approach, in Peru, that number will be cut in half...at least. So, maybe you approach these 20 or so girls. Maybe 7 or 8 of them will give you their number. Out of those 7 or 8, you'll probably be able to get 1 or 2 out on an actual date.
Keep in mind we're talking about the top 10% of Peruvian women here.
Alternatively, you can hit on girls that look like the first picture and have very high conversion rates if your Spanish flirting skills are decent. All depends what your goals are.
In short, you can rack up a huge number of notches with average Peruvian girls. They like foreigners and aren't particularly difficult to get in the sack. Online dating in Lima is perfect for this. But, if you're looking for quality, go to Bogota or Medellin instead. The top 10% there is just as difficult as the top 10% in Lima, so you might as well play the numbers.
The one thing I want you to take away: don't skip Peru (more specifically, Lima) just because you've heard all the women are ugly. It's not true. If you stay in Miraflores, I doubt you'll be THAT disappointed.
Just keep in mind that if you've been to Colombia, Brazil, Argentina or even the Dominican Republic, you'll have to calibrate your expectations.
