La Ceiba City Guide
OVERVIEW: The fourth largest city in Honduras, and considered to be the nightlife capital of the country. Houses a massive Carnival celebration in May each year, during at which time over 500,000 tourists invade the city.
WEATHER: Tropical Rainforest (26-36 °C). One of the wettest cities in Central America. Very humid.
SAFETY: Relatively safe for Honduras, although crime rates are on the up and up. Use caution at night and on the beach, travel in a group, and always stay in well-lit areas.
MUST DO: Par-tay! Try and go during Carnival season. The Garifuna people truly do know how to have a good time.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN LA CEIBA: $200.00 for an apartment near La Ceiba's centre.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $10.00
NIGHTLIFE IN LA CEIBA: 6.75/10
La Ceiba is a bit disappointing for what is supposed to be the best Honduran city for nightlife. Perhaps it depends on the time of year. I can only responsibly recommend two places:
BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN LA CEIBA: 6.5/10
The outlook here is better than San Pedro Sula. Perhaps because there is less security paranoia and more tourists. Nightlife here is very unpredictable though. One weekend it could be completely dead, and the next weekend could be wild as fuck for no apparent reason. If you hit it during Carnival though there will be plenty to go around.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN LA CEIBA?: 6.5/10
The girls in La Ceiba here have a different look than girls in mainland Honduras in that many of them are a mix of Black and Amerindian. This group of people, called the Garifuna, also live on the Caribbean coast of Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. To make a long story short, they look more black than Amerindian, and they make a few decent looking women.
If you want to make the most of your time in Honduras, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.25 Loaf of Bread=$1.50 Eggs= $1.90 Water (1.5L)= $1.80 Cigarettes= $2.00
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Nah.
TAXI: $1.00 should cover minor distances.
NOTES: Come to La Ceiba for a party on your way to Roatan, or for a party on your way back. The weather is a bit uncomfortable with the humidity, and there's not much to do. The city lacks culture and is more than a little rundown.
OVERALL RATING: 6.25/10
