Leon City Guide

OVERVIEW: Leon, Mexico. A safe, affluent mid-large size city that is almost always overlooked by tourists. Best known for their fine leather products. It's also known for shoes - both leather and otherwise - and you'll find entire mall in the city dedicated to them. It's also one of the more progressive cities in Mexico; highly educated population, good infrastructure and environmentally friendly.

POPULATION: 1,500,000 (but it doesn't feel that big).

WEATHER: Humid subtropical. Average temperature of around 20 degrees.

SAFETY: One of the safest big cities in Mexico, if not the safest. Leon has mostly been spared of the drug violence that plagues some parts of Mexico. Petty crime is rare, likely due to the city being relatively affluent. You should be fine here at all hours unless you're doing something stupid like trying to buy drugs on the street.

MUST DO: There isn't much to do here. Shop for shoes and leather products. It's a nice place to work and chill out but if you're looking for tourist attractions in Mexico, skip Leon. Head to Guanajuato instead.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN LEON, MEXICO: $500. It doesn't seem difficult to find a place to rent because there are a lot of university students here doing the same. I couldn't get a handle on where the best place to live here is. You could do worse than around the center or around a university (Tec de Monterrey, Ibero and La Salle de Bajio all have campuses here).

HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT: I don't know if there are any hostels here but there are plenty of hotels. $30 a night will get you a decent one.

NIGHTLIFE IN LEON, MEXICO: 7/10

This being somewhat of a university town, there are tons of places to go out here. Regrettably, I wasn't able to find a cool, unique bar that would be good for picking up. Most of the hot girls here seem to go to Prive or Barezzito, two places I hate.

I recommend: Prive. Only because it tends to have better looking girls than Barezzito, but it's really social circle oriented so it's quite hard to meet anyone.

BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00

CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN LEON: 7.5/10

I stayed in Guanajuato/Leon for almost 3 months. The Bajio region was my first true introduction to Mexico and for that reason it will always hold a special place in my heart. Personally, I had great luck here. The girls are my taste and I seem to be theirs. Of course, I can't speak for everyone, but for me Leon is one of the best places to hook-up in Mexico. But you have to do daygame instead of nightgame, that is, approach girls during the day and try to get numbers. All the malls and shopping centers in this city makes it easy pickings. I'm somewhat shy so it isn't easy for me to approach girls during the day, but trust me, here you will reap the rewards. The women are sweet and very responsive if they find out you'll be staying for more than just a few days. Tinder works well here too.

***ONLINE DATING: If you want to meet girls in Mexico the easy way, I highly recommend signing up for Mexican Cupid. You can chat with local girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country, which is a major advantage.

ARE GIRLS HOT IN LEON, MEXICO?: 7.25/10.

Like I said, they're my style. Think Selena Gomez. There are a lot of girls that have that look to them here. Really cute faces. Lighter complexions and invariably long, black hair. Bodies are decent enough, but not as good as what you'd find in Guadalajara, Mazatlan or Monterrey. Take the 7.25 rating with a grain of salt - again, I'm biased because I'm really into what the girls look like here. But I've talked to others about this vice of mine and it seems really to be a matter of personal taste. After showing a couple friends girls I had hooked up with from the Bajio that I thought were smoking hot, they told me they were average. What can you do.

LEARNING SPANISH IN LEON, MEXICO

If you want to make the most of your time in Mexico, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.00 Tortillas (1kg)= $0.80 Eggs= $1.10 Water (1.5L)= $0.80 Cigarettes= $3.00

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: It's a really good place for teaching English. Pay isn't horrible and there is demand. I met an English here working for a university with no more experience than a degree and a TEFL.

TAXI: Uber is here. Use that, it's easier. You should never pay more than $8.00 to go absolutely anywhere in Leon.

NOTES: Leon could be a great city. Nice girls, safe, good infrastructure. Problem is, is that it is truly unremarkable. Given all the amazing cities that there are in Mexico, I wouldn't make Leon a priority. The center is OK, but other than that the city is pretty ugly. Not quite as Americanized as Monterrey, but it's on that track. That being said, if you are looking for somewhere to get some work done, enjoy nice weather and hook-up with a girl or two along the way, you could do much worse than Leon. Like I said, this is a good place to meet women, particularly younger ones. Though I'd expect you'd get bored fast with nothing else to do.
