OVERVIEW: Located in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. A small city with many shopping malls and fast food restaurants, which makes it appear culturally similar to the United States. Not on the typical tourist's radar.

POPULATION: 250,000

WEATHER: Warm (22-32 °C). Rainy season June-October

SAFETY: Questionable. San Francisco has a reputation for gang-violence, but it's unlikely to affect tourists. Still, I'd be a bit careful; drug violence seems to give rise to general impunity.

MUST DO: Shopping! Not much to do here during the day besides go to the mall.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS: $400.00 is what I'd allow for. Naturally, people will try to get more rent out of you because you're foreign, but more than $500.00 for an apartment in San Francisco is a proper fleecing.

HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $20.00 (no hostels?)

NIGHTLIFE IN SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS: 7.5/10

The nightlife here exceeds what you'd expect from a small city. Apparently, nightclubs are a good way to launder drug money which explains why there are so many good ones in San Francisco.

I recommend: Skuer BarA fairly upper-class joint, which means it's less likely that the men will be offended by you coming to their country and stealing their women. Although this place is popular now, bar recommendations are almost useless in San Francisco, as the hotspots change so often.

BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00

CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS: 8/10

You'll have more of an exotic factor here than in any other major Dominican city. This is because no tourists want to come here. On one hand, this is positive because you will be seem as a mythical God to the hot, young girls. On the other hand, there is truly not much to do in this city so you won't want to stay long. Dominican girls are very receptive, and you can cruise by on the mere fact that you were not born in the Republic. That, along with some Spanish will work wonders for you. You need not go hungry here. Trust me. The one thing I'd look out for is tough guys who aren't cool with the white man coming in and trolling their women. It wouldn't hurt to make a few male friends here to up your cred.

***ONLINE DATING: If you're like me and prefer to set up dates before you arrive in the country, I strongly recommend Dominican Cupid.

ARE GIRLS HOT IN SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS?: 7.5/10.

Takes the crown, at least as far as the Dominican Republic goes. Girls in San Francisco are better than Santiago, Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. They're also be more interested than girls in the aforementioned cities because they're less accustomed to foreigners. If you rent an expensive apartment here in a nice part of town, get ready to ride the wave. It's a shame the city itself is so unremarkable.

LEARNING SPANISH

If you want to make the most of your time in Dominican Republic, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.20   Loaf of Bread= $1.40   Eggs= $1.80   Water (1.5L)= $1.00   Cigarettes= $3.00

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: No.

TAXI: Expect to pay no less than $2.00 unless you are a good negotiator.

NOTES: The girls here are wonderful. The city is not. There is nothing in San Francisco other than the girls that you will be interested in. There is also drug violence. Whether or not you enjoy San Francisco de Macoris depends on what you value. If you need something more than great women to have an enjoyable trip, than it will not cut it. Also, if you do not have at least intermediate Spanish, I'd suggest giving it a pass in favour of Puerto Plata.

OVERALL RATING: 6.75/10
