San Juan del Sur City Guide
OVERVIEW: A small coastal town in southwest Nicaragua, 140 km south of Managua. A popular vacation and surfing spot that is a favourite amongst Canadian, European and American expats.
WEATHER: Tropical (22-28 °C).
SAFETY: Safe. San Juan del Sur is pretty chill. There have been reports of theft, but it is often caused by carelessness. Violent crime is all but unheard of here.
MUST DO: Christ of the Mercy Statue. A gigantic statue of the Man himself overlooking the city. Walk is a bit long but doable.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN SAN JUAN DEL SUR: You can split a house with a few surfers for under $100 a head.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $6.00-$10.00
NIGHTLIFE IN SAN JUAN DEL SUR: 5.5/10
Not a ton of options for nightlife in San Juan del Sur. Almost entirely a tourist/stay-cationer hippie/surfer bar scene. That's not to say it isn't fun, it just gets stale.
LARGE BOTTLE OF BEER: $1.00
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN SAN JUAN DEL SUR: 6.5/10
It's a tourist spot like any other, so you know what to expect. There's not really a high or low season anymore because tourism has grown so rapidly that it all just blends together, but if you go between November and March there are likely to be a few more Nicaraguans. Best chance are the typical female backpackers who pride themselves on their independent and artistic souls. So target one of them, if you can stomach the conversation.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN SAN JUAN DEL SUR?: 6.5/10.
Tourists raise the bar here a bit, but there are some local surfer girls in San Juan del Sur who have talent as well...actually they may have been girls from Costa Rica.
If you want to make the most of your time in Nicaragua, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.30 Loaf of Bread= $1.25 Eggs= $2.40 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $1.25
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Teach surfing.
TAXI: $1.00 but you shouldn't really need a taxi unless you want to check out nearby beaches.
NOTES: What I'm sure was once a cool surf town is rapidly being overrun with tourists, many of whom don't even surf. San Juan del Sur is good only for a few nights stay if you're not there to surf.
OVERALL RATING: 6.25/10
