Valparaiso City Guide
OVERVIEW: Located on the Pacific coast of Central Chile. Bright, colourful houses and a thriving bohemian feel/culture. A major port and educational centre for Chile.
WEATHER: Mediterranean climate (10-20 °C). Dry in the summer, wet in the winter.
SAFETY: Violent crime is not a problem, but theft is. You have a better chance of getting robbed or pickpocketed here than in either Santiago or Conception.
MUST DO: Ascensores. A total tourist-trap, but I have a soft spot for funicular railways.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN VALPARAISO: $500 will get you a nice one bedroom.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $10-12
NIGHTLIFE IN VALPARAISO: 6.75/10
Small but fun. Most bars and clubs are located around Plaza Anibal Pinto, near the ocean. You may want to head to Vina del Mar if you're looking for a bit more action.
I recommend: LaCantera Bar. Perhaps not the best place for meeting women, but a great place to get a drink and listen to some good music.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $1.75
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN VALPARAISO: 6.5/10
Chilean girls have a reputation for being somewhat colder and more reserved than other Latin Americanas. This is somewhat true, but they are no more standoffish than American, Canadian or British chicas. In fact, the tactics you use in those countries will also work here. Don't be overly aggressive, but don't be a wallflower either. Confident courtesy neatly sums up the strategy I'd apply in Valparaiso, as well as in the rest of Chile.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN VALPARAISO?: 6.25/10.
Not excellent. Most girls have vividly average faces and bodies. Obesity has creeped in here as well so there are some hefty lasses about. You'll still see hot girls around here (more at night) but in epically fewer numbers than their neighbours (Argentina...not Bolivia).
If you want to make the most of your time in Chile, you will need to speak some Spanish. Rocket Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.25 Loaf of Bread= $1.00 Eggs= $2.75 Water (1.5L)= $1.25 Cigarettes= $4.50
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Some English teaching opportunities, but not much else.
NOTES: A charming city with a hip bohemian feel. However, if it is women you want instead of a hip bohemian feel, I'd look elsewhere. But if you're an artist or artist at heart, there is something to be gained by a visit to Valparaiso.
OVERALL RATING: 7/10
