Aguascalientes Travel Blog
OVERVIEW: Aguascalientes (Hot water in Spanish) is named after the abundance of naturally-occurring hot springs in the area. It's about 540 km northwest of Mexico City, in the state of Aguascalientes. The city is consistently recognized as having one the highest standards of living in all of Latin America, and it's citizens are among the most well-off in Mexico.
WEATHER: Hot and dry (15-21 °C).
SAFETY: Like a kitten wrapped in a bunny wrapped in a kitten; Aguascalientes is entirely safe.
MUST DO: San Marcos Fair. One of the largest and most epic fairs in Mexico. Miles and miles of drinking, dancing, women, bullfighting, cockfighting, concerts, food, and fireworks. Plenty of fun, and countless opportunities for meeting chicas. Mid-April to early May.
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN AGUASCALIENTES: 6.5/10
As this is a place not often frequented by tourists, you'll get quite a lot of positive attention here. Basic knowledge of Spanish will help your cause; some English is spoken due to the high level of foreign investment in the state/city, but, as in the case in much of central Mexico, English fluency is not as common as you might expect. Girls in Aguascalientes are receptive and open to a fling with a foreigner, but expect a few dates before maneuvering them into the sack. The girls here aren't easy and many will still live with their parents well into their 20s.
***ONLINE DATING: If you want to meet girls in Mexico the easy way, I highly recommend signing up for Mexican Cupid. You can chat with local girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country, which is a major advantage.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN AGUASCALIENTES?: 7.5/10
Lighter complexions than what you'd find farther south in say the Puebla or Cuernavaca, but not as light as you'd find in the major cities of Chihuahua or Sonora. Girls around 5"5 or 5"6 average? Not too good with height so I'm not sure.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN AGUASCALIENTES: $275.00 on the cheap end. If you want nice furnishings, appliances etc. $375 should get you a pretty swanky apartment in Aguascalientes.

HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $8.00
NIGHTLIFE IN AGUASCALIENTES: 7/10
A solid number of clubs, bars and cantinas in Aguascalientes, mostly in and around the San Marcos district (where the fair is held). Enough to satisfy different tastes but could get a tad dull for those planning a long stay.
I recommend: Merendero San Pacho.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00
If you want to meet women in Mexico, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.10 Tortillas (1kg)= $1.00 Eggs= $1.90 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $3.50
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: If you work in the automotive or robotics industry, there may be an opportunity for you in Aguascalientes. There are also a decent number of schools and universities around, so teaching English is a possibility.
TAXI: Should be around $2-3.50 for nearly anywhere in the city.
NOTES: To get the best out of Aguascalientes, I would suggest staying for at least 2-3 weeks. If you're doing a shotgun-style backpacking trip where you just hit and quit cities in a day or two, I wouldn't stay a stopover in Aguas is a must-do...unless it's during the San Marcos Fair. There are better places for partying nearby (see Guanajuato). Overall, it's a nice, clean and safe city and a good place to put down roots for awhile.
OVERALL RATING: 7.5/10
