Antigua Travel Blog
OVERVIEW: A popular tourist destination located in the central highlands of Guatemala. Many first time visitors to Central America will use Antigua as their jumping off point, as it is very safe, full of tourists, and English is widely spoken
WEATHER: Hot and humid (20-26 °C). Rainy season May-September
SAFETY: Antigua is safe during the day. However, at night you should be careful, especially outside of the city centre. Robberies do happen here.
MUST DO: Take Spanish classes. Even if you're already fluent, it's a great place to meet women.
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN ANTIGUA: 8/10
Laughably easy. All you have to do to trap a tourist is seem interesting and exude liberalism. If you speak Spanish it's a major plus because it will make you seem more enlightened...even though you probably only learned it to meet women. Since Antigua is the first introduction to Central America for many travellers, there is what I like to call a "college effect" at play here. Much like when girls first set of for college, when girls set off for their first major backpacking adventure, they are more likely to go white-girl crazy and be more open sexually. Leverage this.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with local girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN ANTIGUA?: 6.5/10.
I'm giving it a 6.5 because there are some good looking tourists here. If I was only judging the local girls of Antigua, it would be about a 5.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN ANTIGUA: $400.00 for a nice, private apartment in Antigua. You won't be able to bring anyone back to your place if you do a homestay (very popular here) so I'd advise against it.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $6.00-$12.00
NIGHTLIFE IN ANTIGUA: 7/10
Tourism has given rise to a moderately impressive bar scene in Antigua. There are plenty of bars around, but they change ownership/names with frequency, so ask around to see what's hot at the moment. PLENTY of tourists here who love to party, so you're in for a good time. And, if recent liberal arts graduates aren't your cup of tea, there are a couple nightclubs in town that draw in rich girls from Guatemala City, although the quality of those girls is dubious.
I recommend: Cafe No Se. An obvious choice, but very good drinks and a very nice interior. Good place to meet other people as well.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00
If you want to meet women in Guatemala, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.50 Loaf of Bread= $1.90 Eggs= $1.80 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $2.00
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Most definitely. If you want to work in Antigua, you can. Especially if you speak Spanish. Waiter and bartender jobs are relatively easy to come by.
TAXI: $2.00 will get you around.
NOTES: A good city to party, learn Spanish, or begin a backpacking trip. You definitely won't have to slum it in Antigua in any way; there's good food, high speed Internet, girls and an overall high level of comfort and security. If you're a restless soul, however, you will get bored after 4-6 weeks.
OVERALL RATING: 6.75/10
