OVERVIEW: A popular tourist destination located in the central highlands of Guatemala. Many first time visitors to Central America will use Antigua as their jumping off point, as it is very safe, full of tourists, and English is widely spoken

POPULATION: 40,000

WEATHER: Hot and humid (20-26 °C). Rainy season May-September

SAFETY: Antigua is safe. You shouldn’t have problems here.

MUST DO: Take Spanish classes; take a photo of that famous yellow arch thing.

CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN ANTIGUA: 7.5/10

Easy. All you have to do to trap a tourist is seem interesting and exude liberalism. I try to avoid backpacker girls while in Latin America, but when in Rome…

With locals girls it’s slightly more difficult. Many come from Guatemala City and will have to head back the same night.

***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with local girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.

ARE GIRLS HOT IN ANTIGUA?: 6.5/10.

I'm giving it a 6.5 because there are some good looking tourists here. If I was only judging the Guatemalan girls of Antigua, it would be about a 5.5.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN ANTIGUA: $400.00 should get you a private apartment in Antigua. You won't be able to bring anyone back to your place if you do a homestay (very popular here) so I'd advise against it.

If you’re doing a short-term stay (one month or less) Airbnb is your best bet.

HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $6.00-$12.00

NIGHTLIFE IN ANTIGUA: 7/10

Tourism has given rise to a moderately impressive bar scene in Antigua. There are plenty of bars around, but they change ownership/names with frequency, so ask around to see what's hot at the moment. PLENTY of tourists here who love to party, so you're in for a good time. And, if recent liberal arts graduates aren't your cup of tea, there are a couple nightclubs in town that draw in girls from Guatemala City.

I recommend: ReillysAn Irish bar, but it’s mostly Guatemalans that go there. Go figure

BOTTLE OF BEER: $3.50

LEARNING SPANISH

If you want to meet women in Guatemala, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.50   Loaf of Bread= $1.90   Eggs= $1.80   Water (1.5L)= $1.00   Cigarettes= $2.00

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Most definitely. If you want to work in Antigua, you can. Especially if you speak Spanish. Waiter and bartender jobs are relatively easy to come by.

TAXI: $3.00 will get you around.

NOTES: A good city to party, learn Spanish, or begin a backpacking trip. You definitely won't have to slum it in Antigua in any way; there's good food, high speed Internet, girls and an overall high level of comfort and security. If you're a restless soul, however, you will get bored very soon.

OVERALL RATING: 6.75/10
