Figured I'd do a quick post about women in Medellin today.
Any man who's the least bit interested in Latin America has heard of Medellin, Colombia. Its reputation truly does precede it. So, while this may see a trivial subject to some, I think it deserves a few lines.
I've written about more meaningless things before, so what the hell.
Anyway, in this post, I'll be discussing girls in the City of Eternal Spring.
Are they as incredible as everyone says?
What are they really like?
Will it be easy to meet them?
Let's get into it!
Medellin is famous for having some of the most beautiful girls in the world. You won't go long on the "gringo trail" without hearing whispers of the coveted paisas and their irresistible sensuality.
Clear, blemish-less skin, dark hair cascading down to their (sometimes fake) ass, the way they talk, the way they move. Any man who's been to Medellin has an opinion regarding the women. And that opinion is usually very positive.
If you're not familiar with the reputation of women from Medellin, it's basically this:
Girls in Medellin are said to be the most attractive in Colombia (of course, Colombians from other cities will contest this, but they know in their hearts that Medellin is renowned). Also, there is a larger emphasis placed on aesthetic beauty than in other parts of the country - you'll see a lot more women running and in gyms in Medellin than you would in, say, Cartagena. This obsession with beauty even extends to plastic surgery. It's not uncommon for girls to get breast implants or ass-enhancements, some even as young as 17 or 18 years old.
So, you've basically got a city whose population is genetically blessed to begin with, maximizing their already-favourable qualities.
Sounds pretty good, right?
But is it true?
When I arrived to Medellin, I had high expectations. How could I not! From what I'd heard, I half-expected some kind of dreamland of beautiful women, where everyone from the barista to the bar maid was drop-dead sexy.
However, I calmed myself down and managed my expectations.
After all, how good could it really be?
Well, the answer was good.
Don't get me wrong, not all of the women in Medellin are stunning. But, they were by far the best I'd seen up to that point during my travels in Latin America. More surprisingly, the quality extended beyond the affluent areas (where you'll usually find most of the attractive women in Latin America) to the more middle class ones. Hell, even in Centro the quality wasn't THAT bad! It was a phenomenon I hadn't yet experienced.
To this day, some of the most attractive girls I've seen in my life were from Medellin.
Although it didn't quite live up to the hype I'd heard from backpackers (who, let's be honest, tend to exaggerate), it still easily ranks as one of the top 5 cities for women in Latin America.
Are They Easy To Meet?
When it comes to meeting women in Medellin, there's a few things to keep in mind.
First, there are a lot of tourists. I was there years ago and was shocked at the number of foreigners - I can only imagine what it's like now (I spoke with a friend who was just there, and he said he saw many more foreigners than in Mexico City). This means you're not going to be unique or stand out in a positive way as a foreigner in Medellin.
While I didn't notice any hostility toward foreigners, it's definitely not an advantage to be one.
Second, there are quite a lot of prostitutes and scammers here. In Medellin, if a women talks to you, you can't assume she doesn't have sinister motives. Scopolamine is a real issue here, and pros won't always be as upfront about the fact they expect to be paid as you might think.
That being said, you'll be happy to know that it is quite easy to meet women in Medellin. I noticed that girls here were quite forward in giving indicators of interest. That is, if they see you and like you, they'll stare at you and smile, move closer to you, play with their hair etc. This is much different than more socially conservative countries like Peru and Ecuador where you'll find that - even if the women are interested in you - they won't make a public show of it.
If you approach girls for their phone numbers, it's generally received well. They aren't as caught off guard by the idea of someone wanting to get their number as girls in Peru, Ecuador or even Mexico. You may not always get it, but you won't get blown off in a rude fashion. Women in Medellin are rather diplomatic in this sense.
So, what are Medellin girls like?
Although it's foolhardy to try and sum up an entire city's female population, there are a couple personality traits that you're likely to run into.
Women in Medellin are extremely proud of their city (many haven't been outside Colombia). The girls from Medellin that I met all seemed to think that Medellin was the best city on earth and that nothing else could possibly compare. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you view it. It's good in the sense that they're passionate about where they're from - people in a lot of Latin American countries can be quite negative about their city, and are often looking for a way out. This sort of attitude can put a damper on things (I experienced this a few times in Lima, Peru). However, it's negative in the sense that, perhaps due to this pride, women from Medellin aren't exactly worldly. If you plan on talking about global affairs - or talking about any city or country that doesn't have to do with Medellin for that matter - you're not likely to get far.
This may be a bit harsh, but I didn't find that girls from Medellin were ever able to hold a decent conversation. In Bogota, on the other hand, I was very impressed with the conversational chops of the local women. So this isn't a country-wide thing. The best approach I found was to keep things very light conversationally. All positivity, 100% of the time. Best not to get into anything too deep...
This is the worst quality of Medellin women. They simply can't commit to a time/day to meet. If you arrange a date with a girl, expect that she won't be able to make it. This is an extremely frustrating aspect of dating in Colombia in general, but girls here are exceptionally bad. It's common for a girl never to arrive to a date without giving you a reason why. If you organize a meeting, you literally have to track the girl's movement. Before you even consider leaving your house, text her and ask if she's on her way yet. If she's not, stay put.
The best way to combat this is to arrange a few dates before your arrive in the country through Colombian Cupid. That way, if one flakes, you have some backups. You'll be able to gauge their level of interest beforehand and decide whether or not they're worth pursuing, and/or if they're likely to flake.
