Boquete Travel Blog
OVERVIEW: The latest hot retirement destination amongst Canadian and American expats. In fact, they make up about 15% of the town's small population. Geographically, Boquete is quite stunning, with mountains, rivers, orchards, volcanoes, and a wide assortment of wildlife on the hills surrounding it.
WEATHER: A cool, mountain climate (14-19 °C). Rainy season June-October.
SAFETY: Boquete is almost certainly safer than where you are currently living.
MUST DO: Volcan Baru. Make sure you do it on a clear day though so you get the view. Tallest point in Panama.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN BOQUETE: Not cheap. $600 minimum for renting a house in Boquete.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $12.00
NIGHTLIFE IN BOQUETE: 4/10
Aside from American style restaurants, there are really only two bars in Boquete: Zanzibar and La Cabana. I wouldn't bother with either of them, but I'm obliged to recommend one.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $2.00
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN BOQUETE: 5/10
Young women in Boquete are more conservative than they are in Panama City, and they all live at home with their families. I'd be surprised to see it go past a grade school style makeout session on the dancefloor.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN BOQUETE?: 5/10.
Not enough to go around, and the majority aren't very pretty. Girls from Boquete are very sweet and down to earth though.
If you want to meet women in Panama, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.30 Loaf of Bread= $1.50 Eggs= $2.25 Water (1.5L)= $1.50 Cigarettes= $4.50
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Perform housekeeping or other household tasks for retired expats.
TAXI: $2.00. If they decide to pick you up. Taxis in Boquete will actually turn you down if they consider the trip is too far! I guess they're not hurting for coin.
NOTES: You're probably wondering why in God's name I bothered to include a Boquete city guide if its women and nightlife are so lackluster. Well, I'll tell you why. Life isn't all about hooking-up and getting drunk. Boquete is far and away the best adventure tourism destination in the entire country, so it's worth checking out. Also, if you go to Panama everyone will have expected you to go to Boquete, so you best not disappoint them.
OVERALL RATING: 6.5/10
