Caracas Travel Blog

OVERVIEW: The Big C, capital of Venezuela. Caracas has the dubious distinction of being the world's most dangerous city outside of a designated war zone. Mansions in the east, slums in the west. Some cities can be trifled with. Caracas is not one of these cities.

POPULATION: 3,000,000

WEATHER: Tropical. (19-29 °C). Very nice in the evenings.

SAFETY: You must be careful in Caracas. Safety is a big concern. If you're robbed, hand it all over. Murdering is too easy because there is virtually no chance of being prosecuted here. Police are corrupt and will offer no assistance. Dress like a Venezuelan and stick to main areas near downtown or the universities.

MUST DO: La Plaza Bolivar. There are many Plaza Bolivars around Latin America. Caracas' may be the most famous.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN CARACAS: $400 to rent a very nice one or two bedroom apartment in Caracas at the moment. I don't, however, suggest living here.

***If you’re doing a short-term stay (one month or less) Airbnb is your best bet. Click this link to register and get $40 off the cost of your first stay.

I'm going to assume a few things:

1) You'll be hanging in upscale establishments in the trendier areas of the city

2) By no fault of your own, you'll be logistically ill-informed

3) You'll be travelling solo or in a group of 3 or less

All of these things will work against you while trying to get laid in Caracas. First of all, rich Venezuelan girls won't be as easy because they have their pick of top Venezuelan men. Second, most people go to clubs and drive the fuck home afterwards because the streets of Caracas are no place to dilly dally. Third, who you're hanging with is important here. Most folk roll in pods so if you're a lone wolf, you're going to draw negative attention to yourself. So, in short, pipeline this city (meet girls online before you arrive) and integrate yourself into a social group as fast as you can. You'll be glad you did.

***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.

Very sweet, feminine and gorgeous women in Caracas. Physically similar to Colombians, but with warmer and more caring personalities.

From what I could gather, there's really no such thing as a "middle class bar/club" as you or I would think of it in Caracas. Basically, your only option without compromising your safety is something upscale and expensive as hell. And Caracas high society is pretty exclusive, so be ready to drop some significant cash just to get through the door.

I recommend: El LeonBetween Calle Argentina and Calle Colombia by the roundabout. Not much of a bar, but they sell cheap beers and food.

If you want to meet women in Venezuela, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= n/a   Loaf of Bread= n/a   Eggs= n/a  Water (1.5L)= n/a Cigarettes= n/a

TAXI: Almost free based on current exchange rate (2017).

NOTES: The security and currency situation in Venezuela make it an incredibly dangerous and expensive place to visit. If Caracas offered something for travellers that other cities around it didn't, I'd be more inclined to give it a better rating. I see Caracas as a mix between Rio de Janeiro and Medellin, encompassing the worst features of both: the favelas and crime of Rio with the blandness and superficiality of Medellin. I hope one day this will change.
