Heredia Travel Blog

OVERVIEW: Heredia is a mere 10 km north of the capital, San Jose. It's a friendly little town. The only reason you would have heard of it is if you ever considered a study abroad option in Costa Rica; literally the only attraction in this town is the UCR. The city is a perfect choice to escape the craziness of San Jose, with enough pretty young things to keep you visually stimulated.

WEATHER: Comfortable (15-25 °C). Rainy season May-October

SAFETY: Safe. The people in Heredia are friendly and, unlike most of the country, honest.

MUST DO: Parque Central. It's not only a must do, it is one of the few things you can do it a town this small. Take a seat and do some building watching and people watching.

I've heard that Heredia is one of the best places to find a Costa Rican girl. Not that there aren't good ones in other cities, it's just that they are more likely to be pros or parasites. In Heredia, the girls are sweet, classy and seem to be interested in you for more than just colons. You'll be able to build rapport here quite easily. I recommend (obviously) staying close to the university, which won't be too hard because Heredia is basically a village. Girls will be likely be interested in you unless you're a complete dickhead, but they will also know that you're not staying long, so this could prevent them from engaging in sack play the first night.

***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.

Yeah, I'll toss it a 6.5. It's no Colombia, but it's better than towns of the same size in Panama.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN HEREDIA: $350.00-$400.00. Expats have drove the property rental prices up in Costa Rica. Even in Heredia, it seems.

***If you’re doing a short-term stay (one month or less) Airbnb is your best bet. Click this link to register and get $40 off the cost of your first stay.

So it turns out that size doesn't matter!! For a town of about 20,000, Heredia does a fine job of nightlife. The people are what makes going out pleasant here. There are plenty of pretty university girls that'll make your heart yearn after you leave; even the guys are friendly!

I recommend: Bulevar RelaxFor once, Lonely Planet was right: Bulevar really is the place to be in this town. The joint is packed nuts-to-roof on the weekend with fun-loving students. The price is right too.

If you want to meet women in Costa Rica, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.40   Loaf of Bread= $1.50   Eggs= $3.20   Water (1.5L)= $2.10   Cigarettes= $3.00

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Here? Not really. Although in other parts of the country where more tourists go you'll probably be able to teach English or something.

TAXI: No more than $2.00 to cruise around here.

NOTES: As a country, Costa Rica does not do much for me. There is quite a bit of of petty crime, people trying to cheat you at every turn and it has a bad case of gringovitus. Heredia is the star pupil of this country.
