Mendoza Travel Blog
OVERVIEW: A city in western Argentina, and the centre of wine production for the country. It is a quaint city, with just over 100,000 inhabitants in the city proper. Mendoza is known for it's breathtaking scenery, world-class wines and olive oil, and outdoor activities.
WEATHER: Arid (18-32 °C). Can get very hot in the summer. Hardly rains.
SAFETY: Extremely safe in Mendoza. I can't fathom anything happening to you here. The poorest part of the city is the northern part, so perhaps stay clear if you're the paranoid type.
MUST DO: Wine tour. Rent a bike, tour around to different wineries and sip some fine wine.
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN MENDOZA: 7.5/10
Welcome to the best chance you have in Argentina for hooking-up with an actual Argentine. The girls of Mendoza are much more receptive to foreigners (and people in general), perhaps because they aren't bombarded with them quite as much as Buenos Aires or Cordoba. If you dress well and speak Spanish, you will be miles ahead of your fellow travellers already. Don't be afraid to approach here, but even if you are chances are that girls will approach you, or make it inescapably clear that they are interested in getting to know you. Love hotels are prevalent in case you're staying in a hostel.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN MENDOZA?: 7.5/10.
As Tony the Tiger would say, "they're grrrrrrrreeeaat! Well, not quite as great as Rosario, Cordoba or Buenos Aires, but remember this is Argentina we're talking about. You'll notice that, physically, the girls in Mendoza are more similar to Merida, Venezuela than to Buenos Aires. I'm not sure of the demographic breakdown of this place, but the girls on average have darker skin and features than Portenas. They are also just straight up kinder and bring more enthusiasm to a party. In my opinion, Mendoza is the best major city to meet women in Argentina.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN MENDOZA: $350.00 is a good starting price for an apartment or house in Mendoza.
If you’re doing a short-term stay (one month or less) Airbnb is your best bet.
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $9.00
NIGHTLIFE IN MENDOZA: 7/10
It isn't Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo or Mexico City, but it doesn't suck. I'd stick to Centro for logistical purposes, but there are a few good bars and discos on the outskirts. Just stay around Plaza Independencia and there are many bars and clubs a stone's throw away.
I recommend: Por Aca. The obvious choice, but also the best for meeting a girl. A bunch of hippie backpackers here on any given night. Try to ignore them.
BOTTLE OF BEER: $1.75
If you want to meet women in Argentina, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.10 Tortillas (1kg)= $1.00 Eggs= $1.90 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $3.50
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Slim. You might be able to work in a hostel in exchange for accommodation.
TAXI: No more than $2.00 unless you're going way outside the city.
NOTES: Mendoza is a marvellous city that should not be overlooked. If you disdain the chaos and cutthroat nature of big city life, and if you like the outdoors and a good glass of wine, I struggle to think of a better city to be a part of. The people are incredibly welcoming, the downtown core is clean, organized and pleasing to the eye and the cost of living is low. It is quite a ways from Buenos Aires, (15 hour bus ride) but I think it's worth it. It's probably my favourite Argentine city. But unfortunately, due to it's smallish size, younger travellers may feel restless if they spend more than a few weeks here.
