Monterrey Travel Blog

OVERVIEW: An important business and industrial city in Mexico. Probably the richest city in the country aside from D.F. It's very much an American-style city with a lot of fast food joints and hotel chains. Very modern, and many people are well-off and sexy.

POPULATION: 1,131,000

WEATHER: Semi-arid (aka: hot as fuck). 20-35 °C. Temperature of 40+ are not uncommon nor welcomed. Still not as bad as Mexicali though. Holy fuck. But I digress...

SAFETY: Not that bad. Based on the news reports, you'd expect that bodies hanging from bridges are a part of daily life in Monterrey, but it's simply not true. Yes, there are murders here and some businesses are getting extorted, but unless you plan on skullin' perico with Z-40's closest confidants, you're not going to notice anything out of the ordinary. If I were you, I'd be more concerned over impregnating an 18 year old.

MUST DO: Mercado Juarez is a massive market where you can get just about anything. There are many cultural and outdoor attractions in the city too, which I'm too lazy to list.

You got a shot, player. The women in Monterrey are absolutely stunning, and rather forward. Although they're not likely to be impressed by your US, Canadian, British (insert first-world country here) passport, if they like the way you look they'll let you know with a nice long stare and smile. I'd say the richest and most beautiful ones are largely unattainable unless you're willing to spend upwards of $200 a night to get into the hottest spots with bottle service. But there are still plenty of jaw-dropping fems that fall within your socioeconomic status.

***ONLINE DATING: If you want to meet girls in Mexico the easy way, I highly recommend signing up for Mexican Cupid. You can chat with local girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country, which is a major advantage.

I'd say Monterrey has the best Girls in Mexico and I've been to all the competitive spots save for Hermosillo. So yes, better than Guadalajara. If you've never travelled to Mexico before, this place will blow your mind in terms of quality. That's not to say that every girl you see on the street or in the supermarket is model fodder, but hit the clubs at night and you will be breaking your neck and picking your jaw up off the floor at the same time.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN MONTERREY: Over $500 for a basic apartment near the city centre.

*N.B. City centre apparently is now undesirable to live, look for a place near the neighbourhood of San Pedro Garza Garcia.

***If you’re doing a short-term stay (one month or less) Airbnb is your best bet. Click this link to register and get $40 off the cost of your first stay.

HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT Not many hostels/ cheap hotels here. There's a couple in Barrio Antiguo for like $25 or $30. Not too sure about cheap lodging in other parts of the city, and unfortunately drug violence has made Barrio Antiguo into a virtual ghost town at night.

A smashing good time. Most of the nightlife in Monterrey used to be around Barrio Antiguo but it has since moved to San Pedro, an affluent suburb of the city, but it hasn't missed a beat.

I recommend: Lobby

If you want to meet women in Mexico, you will need to speak some Spanish. PickUp Spanish is the best resource of its kind, designed specifically for teaching you the Spanish you'll need to meet girls from Latin America.

GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.10   Tortillas (1kg)= $1.00   Eggs= $1.90   Water (1.5L)= $1.00   Cigarettes= $3.50

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Lots of business and industry here. If you have a job with an American-based corporation dealing in manufacturing, retail or service, there's a good chance they have a firm operating in Monterrey.

TAXI: $5.00-7.00

NOTES: Monterrey offers phenomenal nightlife, stunningly beautiful girls and not much culture shock. It's worth noting, though, that it is not cheap to live here. The GDP per capita here is above $40,000, so things like restaurants and accommodation are going to run you a bit more. I'd say Monterrey is an ideal city for either a weekend or weeklong stay. I'm not sure I could hack living here for too long...reminds me too much of where I came from. So, if you're looking to go to Latin America to escape the lifestyle and culture from whence you came, there are better cities.
