Trujillo City Guide
OVERVIEW: Located on the northern coast of Peru, Trujillo is the country's third largest city.
WEATHER: Spring-like temperatures all year (20-30 °C).
SAFETY: A bit safer than Chiclayo, but theft is still an issue here. Don't flash your cell phone around and don't carry more cash than you need.
MUST DO: A very important cultural destination in Peru. Visit some of the city's many museums. Cafe-Bar Chez Gerard is a good spot to check out for a bite to eat.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN TRUJILLO: $500.00 should get you something nice in the best area (Santa Victoria).
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT About $10.00 is the cheapest you'll find to stay in Trujillo.
NIGHTLIFE IN TRUJILLO: 6/10
Trujillo isn't the best for nightlife. The biggest concentration of bars are in the center of the city, but options and quality are lacking for a city of its size. Although it's said that it has the best nightlife options on the coast, I'd say Chiclayo is actually a better option...unless I'm missing something.
I recommend: Brothers Bar
BOTTLE OF BEER: $3.00
CHANCE OF HOOKING-UP IN TRUJILLO: 6.25/10
Same as Chiclayo. Trujillo isn't the best city for meeting girls in Peru. There are less foreigners here than in Cusco or Lima, so you may get some attention due to that, but it isn't likely to translate into much else. While you might think that, given the ease of hooking up in Cusco and Lima, that other, second tier cities in the country would be even better. This doesn't seem to be the case. Perhaps there isn't as much of a hook-up culture, or perhaps there is a stigma toward hooking-up with foreigners. Hard to say. It's not a big deal, though. If you come to Trujillo, do so for the cultural attractions and the nearby beaches, not for the women.
***ONLINE DATING: Latin American Cupid allows you to talk with girls and set up dates before you arrive in the country. For this reason, I recommend it.
ARE GIRLS HOT IN TRUJILLO?: 6.25/10.
Pretty good. A small notch above Chiclayo. I'd still give the overall crown to Arequipa or Lima, but in Trujillo you will find some attractive women. Like in the rest of Peru, the quality on the street during the day will not be great. But at night in bars and nightclubs, it isn't too bad. By Peruvians standards, there are definitely worse places for women than Trujillo.
If you want to make the most of your time in Peru, you will need to speak some Spanish. Synergy Spanish is the best resource for learning Spanish quickly and easily.
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.30 Loaf of Bread= $1.75 Eggs= $1.70 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $3.50
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Again, teaching English would likely be your only option.
TAXI: Should be around $2.50 to get around.
NOTES: More organized and more attractions than nearby Chiclayo. You also have Huanchaco nearby, which is a popular beach town. Check out Trujillo for a day or two if you're planning to hit the beach, but I would not suggest this place for a long term stay. Peru offers many better travel options for tourists.
OVERALL RATING: 6.5/10
